Thorough investigations and individualised treatment is essential to achieving best possible fertility outcomes.

Am I Infertile?

If you and your partner are struggling to get pregnant, you are not alone. One in six Australian couples experience difficulty conceiving. Delayed conception does not necessarily mean you are infertile and it can be hard to know how long to wait before seeking medical assistance.

Generally it is recommended to consider seeing a doctor if you have been trying unsuccessfully for 12 months or longer. In some cases however, sooner is better and I encourage patients to seek early advice under following circumstances:

Female partners

  • If you are 35 or older
  • If your periods are irregular
  • If you have been diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Disease in the past
  • If are suffering from, or have been treated in the past, for endometriosis
  • If you have a family history of early or premature menopause
  • If you are a carrier of a genetic disorder
  • If you have issues having a normal intimate relationship with your partner
  • If you were diagnosed with an STD in the past
  • If you have suffered from any other gynaecological conditions and were told you might experience difficulties falling pregnant

Male partners

  • If you have had a vasectomy or vasectomy reversal
  • If you have undergone testicular surgery for conditions such as undescended testis or testicular torsion
  • If you are aware of any pre-existing sperm issues
  • If you have had chemotherapy treatment
  • If you are a carrier of a genetic disorder
  • If there is a family history of male infertility

Couples who are aware of their need for donor gametes (donor sperm or donor eggs) should also seek early advice.

In addition, there are a number of less common conditions not listed which can affect your fertility.

If you are at all concerned, please do not hesitate to make an appointment to discuss your fertility.
